Falling Feels Like Flying
...until you hit the ground.
There is a lot of outrage today.
There are a lot of people who are saying that we must fight.
There is a lot of talk about what we have to do to protect, what passes for, our “democracy.”
All it really amounts to is impotent rage, half-hearted fights, and tepid solutions.
What the American public has proven over and over and over is that it’s incapable of actually fighting for what they believe is right.
They had their chance to gather together to combat a common enemy 5 years ago, and instead they just invited the enemy into the house and then pretended like it wasn’t there.
I’d like to be wrong, but I’m not. (The rant part of our program)
When the left and the right and the liberals and the conservatives gave up on Covid, normalized millions of deaths, and allowed a deadly virus to run rampant through the country, we were finished.
I had a chat with an “activist” yesterday. She is starting a theater/dance group focused on raising awareness of the dangers of Donald Trump and “saving the planet.” I asked her if her group is doing anything to protect the members of her group and the audience from Covid, and then the knives came out. She “informed me” that Covid is just a flu, that she had Covid once (that she knew of), that the vaccine is what hurts people, that she has a disabled cousin, (I wasn’t sure what that had to do with our conversation) that she was seventy years old, ate a good diet and exercised regularly, and that she wasn’t concerned about this virus.
I asked her if I could send her some information about the dangers of repeated infections and the cumulative damage that’s done by each infection, and she said, no.
She told me that she had all the information that she needed.
She and people like her are the reason I don’t think there’s going to be any significant resistance against the powerful people who are going to destroy this country and everything in it for their own gain.
The current occupant of the Oval Office is going to do what he wants, with the full backing of his supporters, and the opposition, or what claims to be opposition, is going to make a little noise and the rest of us are going to sign online petitions, call our “representatives” and maybe head outside for a protest or two and that’s about it.
What we are not going to do (and I pray to whatever god will listen that I’ve underestimated us) is actually walk away from this shit show, build small equitable communities, and live there for as long as we have left.
We won’t do that because it’s uncomfortable, it requires sacrifice, and it requires courage and if we had those attributes I think they would have been in evidence long before now.
This whole situation is like a bunch of people on a party bus speeding towards a cliff, and someone notices and suggests, just as it goes off the cliff, that maybe we should step on the brakes.
We are off the cliff.
Brace for impact.
